In partnership with British Council, We Are Unlimited are delighted to offer five International Partner Awards of up to £50,000 for collaboration between UK-based and international disabled artists.

The aim of these awards is to facilitate partnership and collaboration between disabled artists and/or collectives in the UK and in selected countries which are eligible to receive Official Development Assistance (ODA).

Who can apply?

These awards are open to:

  • professional disabled artists, or disabled artists leading the creation of work within disabled-led companies
  • collaborations led by a disabled artist based in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, or Wales
  • aged 18 plus
  • not in full-time education

Criteria

These criteria will be used by our selection panel to assess your application. We’re looking to invest in work that will have a life beyond the initial commission. We expect all the work we fund to reach multiple audiences, as part of our wider work to challenge and change the world.

We’re looking for work that creates genuine international collaboration._ It should produce positive social and/or economic impacts, from artists wishing to create and share a new piece of work._

It can be created in any of the following artforms: architecture, combined arts, dance, drama, fashion, film, literature, music, and/or visual arts.

The work should be:

  • High quality
  • Disabled-led
  • Innovative and ambitious
  • A genuine collaboration – an exchange of skills and knowledge
  • Improving networks as a result of the collaboration
  • Developing the artistic practice of all involved
  • Reaching multiple, diverse venues and audiences
  • The lead artist has a strong track record of creating work and reaching audiences

Eligible countries

The work must facilitate a meaningful collaboration with a disabled artist/collective based in one of the following Official Development Assistance (ODA) countries: Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Colombia, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, Occupied Palestinian Territories*, Pakistan, Perú, Philippines, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine**, Uganda, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.

We reserve the right to suspend activities in any of the countries listed above if a national safety concern arises.

We understand that not all ODA-eligible countries will have disabled-led organisations, and that many are still led by non-disabled people. Our selection panel will take this into account, aiming to support those focusing on the direct benefit to disabled artists.

How to apply

We have a two-stage application process aimed at protecting artist’s time and energy. We’re currently inviting applications for stage one.

Stage one: Expression of interest (EOI)

This stage is all about communicating your ideas to our independent panel who will review their potential.

In your application we need you to tell us about your project idea, the artform you are using, and if your project is disabled led. We also want to know roughly how much you think it will cost, and a little detail on how developed the idea is. We’ll ask you to share examples of previous work, and to fill in an equality of opportunities form.

Deadline for this stage: Monday 30 September, midday.

You can submit your application using text, video, or audio through our online portal. You can also apply via email using the Word document provided.

To help you get started on your application, here’s a checklist:

  • Read the information on this page, including the award criteria
  • Review the applicant information
  • Read the FAQs
  • Attend an info session or ask us questions directly
  • Get in touch to request access support if needed

If you’ve done all this, you’re ready to apply for our Partner Awards!
